Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Today’s art exhibition is a very special occasion, as its very rare, or may even the only one so far in Singapore that of the 5 artists in the exhibition, 3 are awarded the Singapore’s Cultural Medallion, and 2 are also regards as very high potential candidates for the National’s recognition.

This is a clear indicator that today’s exhibition is representing one of the highest standards of modern Chinese ink paintings in Singapore.
The 5 artist’s professional career took off in the 1970s, for over forty years, they have dedicated their utmost passion and lives to the art of painting, each had developed their unique and distinct styles, which showcases in each of their artwork display today.
As second generation artists who grew up together with the development of Singapore, they had pursue and explore new art techniques and ideas that had reflect the cultural development of the young nation.
With the artistic achievement and value of the Singapore pioneer artists is widely recognise today, these second generation artists are the new focus and most sought after in today’s art scene. 
This exhibition had provides the audience an opportunity to appreciate the distinctive art styles of some of most outstand artists of the generation.
Please take the opportunity to interact with the artists who are mostly present today, and gain more insights on the exhibition.
On behalf of everyone present, I would like to pay tribute to the achievements of these artists, and also like to express gratitude to the host for organising this exhibition and thank the audience for joining us today.

“潮•五艺荟”画展开幕礼

今天的“潮•五艺荟”画展,展出五位优秀的潮籍水墨画家的作品,身为闽人,很荣幸受邀主持开幕,想有三个原因:
一是我和今天参展多数画家,相识相知将近40年,见证了他们一路的艺术发展历程。
其次,我太太是潮籍,所以是个潮人女婿或传统说法的潮州姑爷。
更重要的是大家今天日常所熟悉的福建和潮州两个地方,只是行政地理上的划分,在学术研究的文化地理上,其实闽南地区、潮汕地区和一部分的海南地区,都同属于一个大文化圈,在语言和文化上同属于一个体系,彼此关系与交流密切。
例如在传统戏剧里,潮剧和泉州戏,都同样有“陈三五娘”这一剧目,甚至还有一种戏剧唱腔名为“潮泉腔”,关系可见一斑。

文化的成长和发展,需要交流;艺术也一样。
千年来,中国的书画艺术,就是因为有了交流而发展,才会在各地域形成各种不同风格的画派。
古代中国书画的发展,主要进行的是东西方和大江南北的跨地域文化交流,近现代主要则的是海内外的中西文化交流。
这期间,中国传统水墨有两度流传海外,一是形成了朝鲜的国画,二是影响了日本的南画,但都属于北亚地区的传统儒家文化圈。
直到近百年来,中国水墨才又一次流传距离更远的海外,就是以新加坡为主的南洋水墨。

新加坡水墨,是水墨这一门中国独有的绘画艺术,真正置身于海外完全不一样的环境,直接和西方及南洋文化交流融合、互相影响下绽放的一朵艺术之花。
新加坡水墨画,拥有中国、西方、南洋三大文化基因,并且从上世纪30年代前后开始,逐渐形成独具一格的“南洋风格”、及“南洋水墨”。
这是新加坡水墨画独有的艺术定位与价值。

今天展览的5位画家,就是当代新加坡水墨画的代表性画家,在他们的作品里,随时可以看见传统中国、西方与南洋元素交汇的结果,是以东方艺术为主体,多元融会的艺术结晶。

由于时间关系,我们无法对他们的艺术世界,作深入分析,只能从整体上,观察他们的艺术特色。
五位画家,都是从上世纪70年代就开始投身艺术创作的专业画家,专心沉潜画艺近50年,形成他们各自独特的艺术性格,或艺术风格。
在整体风格上,陈建坡,赖瑞龙,林家雄三位的作品,呈现的是一种动感;许梦丰和李福茂的作品,却给人很恬静的感觉。
再进一步观察每一位的风格特色,又各有不同:
陈建坡的画,表现是苍劲老辣,内劲十足;
赖瑞龙的画,表现是圆润丰沛,一派从容;  
林家雄的画,表现是力度沉着,厚重雄浑。
许梦丰和李福茂的作品,一样风雅,却有不同的雅意,许梦丰是典雅,李福茂是清雅。典雅和清雅,是中国传统文化非常讲究的清贵之气。
他们的风格,无论是动是静,全都显得性格鲜明、生气蓬勃,这正是南洋水墨的特征值一。

这五位参展画家,有3位是新加坡国家文化奖得奖人,2位是被认为具有高度潜能的文化奖候选人,代表了他们备受肯定的艺术成就,也显示今天的画展,具有很高的艺术水平,可说是代表今天新加坡水墨世代一部分最优秀创作的一项画展。

目前,新加坡第一代先驱画家的艺术成就与价值,已经受到大家的认同和肯定。
今天的画展,集合了5位属于第二代新加坡水墨画的代表性画家,让大家由机会可以一次观赏他们的创作世界,是一次难得的艺术盛会,也是一项美好的机遇。特别是多数画家今天都在现场,请大家好好把握时机,尽情交流学习、观赏品味。
